Cappadocia has a dry climate. It is
on a plateau at an altitude of about 1,100m.
Snowfalls are frequent and the temperature
variesfrom –15o C to 38o C the area
is sparsely vegetated because of low rainfalls. Gravine and
agriculture were the main occupations of the people. All the
same time though, people practiced other jobs and many of
them were tradesmen.
Briefly well make a reference
to some of the Cappadocian villages.
Akserai
- Gelveri Region
The main occupation of the men in Gelveri was mason (a person
who builds using stone, or works with stone) .This occupation
developed in order to satisfy the needs of the village because
the surface of the ground was of soft rock material.
Caesarian
Refion
The people of this region were metal workers and blacksmiths.
This occupation is considered to be well over 300 years old.
They made large metal pots, baking pans and metal jugs which
the sold to other towns.
Nigde Region
The people from Axos were potters. Potters were well developed
in this village. The Potters were strictly women and all the
items which they made were hand-made. The pots were baked
in an open fire.
Misti -
Tsarikli
The people of these villages were mainly
ketsetzides.
They made various types of rugs (whose making were venturesome
aid not related to weaving) . Using the
same procedure they made long thick capes (overcoats), socks,
hat etc. The amazing thing about these, is that then didnt
use needles and thread . Their only tool was a dexara.
Prokopi
Region
The main occupation of the people of Prokopi were masons.
They were divided into three categories: the workers who mined
the stone from the quarries , those who worked the stone into
the shapes required , and the builders .
Farasa Region
Themertzides. They specialized in the making of tools made
of iron.
